When They Met

Since the time of its release in 2006, Jab We Met is one film that I have been recommended to watch time and again. I have tried catching it too. But never could in totality and had to stop short somewhere in the middle of the film or towards its climax. Thus missing the fun of seeing how the film in its entirety was. Well, it is a Sunday morning and while I was surfing the channels I couldn't help but stop to watch the film (or at least try watching it) once and all over again. Thankfully, today I did go through the entire film and not just in bits and pieces. Mainly courtesy the newfound admiration I have developed for Kareena Kapoor having watched her latest film Gori Tere Pyaar Mein where she has given the performance of a lifetime. But it is for Jab We Met that she has received most applause from the public and the critics alike. So I just wanted to see if her performance in the film really outwits what she has done in GTPM. I don't know about that but the film itself was fascinating. Delightful, romantic and a lot of fun.
I just love Geet Kaur Dhillon's character in the film just as almost everyone who has seen the film does. Ok, so she talks too much. Annoys the hell out of Aditya whom she bumps into on a train to Bhatinda. But she is also lively and has an understanding of life that may seem fairytale-like at first but eventually manages to get Aditya's dilapidated family business back on track and leads it to extreme success. So much so that Aditya confesses later that he resorts to asking himself 'what would Geet do' whenever he finds it difficult to decide something.

There is a scene in the movie where Geet is running away to her boyfriend Anshuman in Manali with Aditya. And Aditya tries to put some sense into her saying that life is to be taken seriously. He says, "The way you are handling your life, you could be in a big mess, do you realize that? Life is not just play, Geet. You have to be serious too in life." To which Geet replies, “You were very serious in life, Aditya, weren’t you? What benefit did it do you? You too got into a big mess, didn’t you? No one can control what is to happen ahead of us? So I do in these moments what my heart tells me. I don’t want to blame anyone else tomorrow for screwing my life. I will know that my life is however it is simply and only because of the choices I have made. And that will make me happy.” And then she turns to look at Aditya right in the eye and says one of her hotshot one liners, “Funda zyaada ho gaya naa? (Too much learning, isn’t it?).“
Geet Kaur Dhillon is an eternal optimist who believes that if you truly want something, you will get it. A thought that Aditya tries to huge success in his business which had gone down in the dumps after his father's demise.
Aditya's resentment towards his mother (who leaves his father for another man) too is set to rest when Geet tells him, "When someone is in love, then there is no right or wrong." An idea that takes time for Aditya to accept but he finally realizes that to be the truth and resumes working with his mother in the company she and his father had built.
It all ends well with Geet confessing her love to Aditya after she realizes that she is in love with him and not Anshuman. The two get married and...live happily ever after.
